An inclusion Advisor in the Scouts is a volunteer role dedicated to ensuring Scouting is welcoming, accessible and inclusive for all young people and adult volunteer. They act as champion for diversity, removing barriers to participation and supporting leaders to make reasonable adjustments for those with additional needs, disabilities or from under-represented backgrounds.

Role Context

We are looking to appoint three Inclusion Advisors to work with the County District Support team covering North, South and East Hampshire. Each Advisor will be covering a number of Districts and will need to commit to travelling to visit Groups across their District on an occasional basis. They will also need to attend meetings mostly virtual but some in person.

  • A strong commitment to Scouting’s values and principles
  • Inclusive and collaborative in approach, valuing diverse perspectives
  • Adaptable and proactive, with a positive attitude toward change and innovation
  • Willingness to commit sufficient time to the role which occasionally includes travel and evening/weekend commitments

Skills and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of the structure, programme and culture of scouting within Hampshire.
  • Ability to work across all the sections from Squirrels to Network.
  • Skilled in sharing knowledge and mentoring others, particularly in creating accessible programmes.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a supportive and empathetic approach.
  • Strong understanding of inclusion, diversity, neurodiversity, faiths/beliefs, disability and LGBT+
  • Proactive in identifying solutions to barriers in participation.

Key Tasks

  • Provide a first point of contact within their Districts for support and guidance on all aspects of inclusion to help volunteers create welcoming and accessible Scouting experiences.
  • Act as an advocate for Inclusion within Hampshire, championing good practice across events and through digital communications.
  • Support the County Inclusion Lead to implement consistency of practice with respect to working with Young People with additional needs: advising on the development of care plans and appropriate risk assessments.
  • Aid the County Inclusion Lead in facilitating learning opportunities from challenging situations in sections and groups and building consistency of practice.
  • Support the County District Support team as and when requested to do so.
