Scouts & Girlguiding in Hampshire Hospitals

Our purpose

Our aim is simple in Scouts and Girlguiding in Hampshire Hospitals,  we want to make the principles of Scouting and Girlguiding accessible to as many young people as we can.

Volunteers bring enthusiasm, knowledge and laughter to any young person, who wishes and it’s able to participate with them.

The team provides a tailored programme to all young people they meet and as part of the team you will always have a friendly like-minded adult with you.

We rise to the challenge of engaging young people with all manner of conditions and restrictions, meaning that our Scouting and Girlguiding may be done with an accompaniment of drips, frames, wheelchairs, oxygen cylinders and beds!

We also run activity sessions specifically for siblings of long-term patients, giving them an opportunity to experience Scouting and Girlguiding.

How we work

We just go out onto the wards with bags packed with all materials and guidance on the pre-planned activities.

These are usually based on Scouting or Girlguiding skills and badge work.

We engage with young people at the bedside or in playrooms with an emphasis on fun distracting away from pain or discomfort and keeping boredom at bay.

Martin Rudd, Chair SGHH & County Team Lead Community Support & Vice President Hampshire Scouts

I continue to have the privilege of looking after this wonderful Scouting outreach activity, which brings joy and additional focus, via our great & dedicated team of leaders, to so many young people when they can be at their most vulnerable in hospital.

You will have noticed the badge and heading of this article, I am sure. So, we can now confirm that we have joined forces with Girlguiding Hampshire.

This will eventually make a positive difference to our overall SGHH leader numbers and to how we are able to ensure a teams can be scheduled in hospitals each week.
